Mommy Mondays - Fabric Softener Saver

Monday, March 12, 2012

My favorite thing about laundry (okay, probably the only thing about doing laundry) is the yummy smell of fresh and hot clean blankets, clothes and everything else that come straight from the dryer.
For the past two years, I've used Tide Free and Clear since my son has been born since it's supposed to be sensitive to the skin, but since it's sensitive formula, it doesn't have a scent.
So, I've become dependent on the fabric softener to make my laundry get that yummy laundry smell! I don't want to overkill on the smell yet fabric softeners can get pricey (especially if you buy without a coupon - gasp!)

So my mom taught me a little trick to help save money on fabric softener yet continue to make our clothes have that fresh laundry smell.

1.  Use a clean gallon sized container - milk jug, water jug.
2. Pour your Downy (or whatever fabric softener you choose) into the jug.

This week, you can grab a 90 load Downy bottle for $6.99 at Meijer.  Use a $0.50 off coupon from March P&G insert which will double to $1.  So you'll pay $5.99 for the container.

3.Once you have poured the softener into the jug, fill up the remainder of the jug with tap water.
Even though it is diluted, your laundry will still be soft and smell super yummy!  Plus, the smell isn't totally overbearing.

(This is my jug right now.  Almost time to refill 'er up!)

Usually, one jug lasts anywhere from 2-3 months.  Therefore, depending on how much you spend on your fabric softener, I will pay about $24 a year to make my clothes smell great and feel oh so good!

Thank mom, for the tip! :)

Happy (and yummy) Laundry!
