Mommy Mondays - Edible Finger Paints

Monday, June 11, 2012

Today was one of those days.
Gloomy, muggy and ugly outside.
Of course my child was one those monsters from "Where the Wild Things Are."
So I wanted to do something that was fun and engaging.

Finger painting.

But at 20 months, we all know how everything goes into the mouth and I know painting is messy, but I wanted a paint that wasn't going to stain everything in contact.

I found this great recipe from Momtastic, and it was SUPER easy and cheap!  All the ingredients were in my pantry - sugar, flour, water and food coloring.

Here's the recipe:

1.  Add 2 T of sugar into a pan.
2.  Then, add 1/3 cup of flour.
3.  Next, add 2 cups of water and whisk the mixture until it is smooth.
4.  Finally, heat the mixture and whisk constantly until it gets thick.  It will be almost glue or gooish.
5.  Pour the mixture into the amount of different paints you want to make.
6.  Add a few drops to each cup, mix it up and VOILA!  You have some yummy and fun paints for you tots!

The paint will be hot, so allow it some time to cool before you give it to your little guy or gal to paint.  I made it right before dinner, ate dinner and then we went outside and painted.

And boy was it a hit!

It was seriously so fun!  And the paint came right off my clothes and the few spots that he got on the deck.  I suggest painting outside because we went right the to hose and "played" in the water to wash up before going back inside.  I can't wait to have a playdate with my cousin's girlies so we can try this recipe out again!

Happy Painting! :)
