Affordable DIY

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Earlier this month, I decided that I was going to repaint my photography studio. I am a paint snob and will not buy cheap paint. I would rather do one coat than three coats. I am loyal to Lowes and their Valspar paint. The stuff is $38 a gallon, but the stuff works so awesomely good. Every trip I make a stop at the "discount" shelf. This shelf is loaded with paint that gets messed up and ones that people decide they don't want. Someone must have been looking over me today, because I found the color I was looking for in the discount/messed up/reject shelf. . . . . white . . . . . for $5. Yes, folks, $5.

You have to be open minded when approaching this shelf and you have to make sure you aren't going to need more than one gallon. It's ideal painting small spaces, like laundry rooms and bathrooms. It's a great money saver for your next DIY project! Oh, and make sure you have them shake it up for you before you hit the register!

Happy Painting!

Mommy Mondays - Kids Eat Free!

Now that my son is past the mushy foods and eats all solids, we can finally take him out to dinner and order him real food!  But kid's meals can get expensive - especially when he eats only a third of his meal.  So, as we ate dinner at Casler's in Fishers on Saturday, the waitress reminded us that kids eat free on Mondays there!  And a thought came to me about how much money we could save going out to eat on nights where my son's meal is free.  And then ANOTHER thought crossed my mind about how nice it would be to have a list of all the local areas in Indianapolis that offered free kids meals and on which nights.

I did a little search and found this great website - My Kids Eat Free.  You can put in your state and search your surrounding cities to find out which restaurants offer free kids meals and on which nights!

For you local Indianapolis readers, I've compiled a list of some area places and listed them below:

Fishers
--Casler's -- Monday

--Scotty's Lakehouse -- Monday

Carmel
--Beef O'Brady's -- Tuesday 4-8pm

--Max and Erma's -- Tuesday

--Major's Sports Cafe -- Monday

--Gelato Da Vincci Bistro -- Monday and Tuesday after 5

Noblesville
--Chili's -- All day Tuesday

--Michelangelo's - Wednesday

Indianapolis
--A2Z Italian Cafe - Wednesday and Thursday

--Granite City -- Sunday after 5

--Johnny Rockets -- Every day from 4-7!

--Penn Station -- Tuesday

--Scotty's Brewhouse -- Sunday

--Steak and Shake - Saturday and Sunday

--Stir Crazy-- Tuesday and Thursday

Still call ahead and double check with some of these restaurants but here's a starting point for your family!  Enjoy your Monday, moms !

Happy Eating! :)

Walgreens Scenarios for Week of 1/29

Sunday, January 29, 2012

Alright, here's how my shopping trip went tonight.  I did have $5 RR left over from last week, but I won't include that in the scenario.

Here's a quick tip: Don't be afraid to speak up if your RR don't print out!  Mine didn't again this week, but I just show the manager the ad and they were so nice about making sure I got my $4 RR.  I think my binder may have helped me out a little bit -- they realized they were dealing with a novice. :)

Transaction #1
--Softsoap and Colgate Items -- 4/$12 and earn $4 RR on 4.  I purchased:
  • 2 Irish Spring Body Washes -- Used 2 $1 off coupons (SS 1/29).
  • 1 Irish Spring Deodorant -- Used 1 $1 off coupon (SS 1/29).
  • 1 Colgate Optic White Toothpaste -- Used $1 off coupon (SS 1/15).
Final Price: $8 and earned $4 RR making each item just $1 each.

Transaction #2
--Pringles -- 4/$6.  Used $1/4 (Jan P&G--expires 1/31) and $4RR from Transaction #1 plus earned $2 RR.

Final Price: $0.25 per can plus $2 RR leftover.

Transaction #3
--Charmin Basic toilet paper (6 double rolls) -- $2.99.  Used $0.25 off any Charmin toilet paper (Jan. and Feb. P&G) and my $2 RR.

Final Price: $2.74 and used $2RR making these rolls of TP just $0.74!

Total for all 3 Transactions: $9.74 (before tax).  Whoo hoo!  Not too shabby! :)

Happy Shopping! :)

FREE Humphrey's Teething Tablets

On my way to the toothpaste aisle tonight at Walgreens, I spotted this precious little baby:

And after reading the heading of this ad board, it all came back to me -- times 16!!  My son is a shark - 16 months old and 16 teeth - seriously.  And since they were popping up like corn in a cornfield, we tried everything we could to help soothe the poor little guy.  We used Humphrey's teething tablets for the first eight teeth (the last 8 have been molars and canines, therefore baby Advil is a must).  I actually liked them a lot better than Orajel because there is no numbing with these tablets.

What makes this ad even better is you can get your own Humphrey Teething Tablets FREE!
There's a rip-off rebate form on the ad board so once you buy your tablets, follow the directions on the rebate and submit it for your free teething tablets.  Trust me moms, teef hurt.  Anything will help - especially if you can try it for free!

Stop by your baby aisle at Walgreens to grab your rebate!

Walgreens Deals for the Week of 1/29

Not too impressed this week with Walgreens, but here are some deals I think are post-worthy:
--St. Joseph Enteric Asprin - $2 and earn $2 RR.  Final Price: FREE

--Pringles -- 4/$6.  Use $1/4 (Jan P&G--expires 1/31) and earn $2 RR.  Final Price: $0.75 per can when you buy 4.

--Quaker Granola Bars - 2/$4.  Use $0.75/2 (SS 1/22).  Final Price: $1.63 each.

--Scott Naturals Paper Towel (6 count) -- $5.  Use $1 of any Scott Towel 4 or more (SS 1/22) and use the $1 store coupon.  Grab a cheap filler (something like $0.30ish) to be able to use both coupons.  Final Price: around $3 depending on your filler.

--Charmin Basic toilet paper (6 double rolls) -- $2.99.  Use $0.25 off any Charmin toilet paper (Jan. and Feb. P&G).  Final Price: $2.74.

--Softsoap and Colgate Items -- 4/$12 and earn $4 RR on 4.  Use any four of the following:
  • Irish Spring Deodorant -- $1 off coupon (SS 1/29).
  • Irish Spring Body Wash -- $1 off coupon (SS 1/29).
  • Softsoap Body Wash -- $0.75 off coupon (SS 1/29).
  • Softsoap Bar soap -- $0.50 off coupon (SS 1/29).
  • Colgate Optic White or Total Toothpaste -- $1 off Colgate Optic White or Total TP (SS 1/15) or $0.50 off any Colgate TP (SS 1/29).
  • Colgate Optic White Toothbrush -- Use $1 off any Optic White TB (SS 1/29)
**I'll make a scenario on this deal for you to try out -- be on the lookout later!**

After my trip if I find any more, I'll post them.  But I'll make a scenario out for the Softsoap and Colgate items!  Good luck!

Happy Shopping! :)

Cheap Charmin at Walgreens

I'll post the Walgreens match-ups soon (not too promising this week) but here's a great scenario you could use to stock up on toilet paper:

--Charmin Basic toilet paper (6 double rolls)-- sale price $2.99.  Use $0.25 off any Charmin product (Jan. and Feb. P&G).  Final price: $2.74

If you have any RR, you could find a small filler and double up your savings!  Everyone needs toilet paper - especially at a price like this!

CVS Greenbag Tag

I was checking out today at CVS and this Greenbag Tag caught my eye.  It's only $0.99 and you earn $1 ECB back after using it four times!

Here's how it works and here are the perks:
  • Purchase your Greenbag Tag for $0.99.  You'll get $0.49 off your first purchase too!
  • Put it around the handle of any reusable bag and make sure you bring that bag to CVS for every trip!
  • Have the register scan your tag and your ECC with every purchase.  You can only get it scanned once a day.
  • On your 4th visit, you'll earn $1 ECB!
This card totally pays for itself, especially if you shop at CVS a lot (like me, oops).  I'm going to just keep my bag in my car so even if I make an unexpected stop, I'll have my greentag to get scanned!

Happy Shopping! :)

Creating a Coupon Binder

Saturday, January 28, 2012

We've had several people ask us tips on how they can start their own coupon binders.  So, here's a post dedicated to sharing our tips and helping you get started with your own binder!

Where do you start?  Well, first you need materials. Here's what we suggest you invest in:
  • 3 inch binder
  • Tab divider sheets
  • Clear cover sheets used for playing cards (you can find them in the baseball card section at your local stores)
  • Your coupon inserts

After you purchase your binder and materials, decide how you want to organize your coupons.  The easiest way is to organize based on general categories, like dairy, frozen foods, baby, dog, etc.  Then label your tabs with your categories.

Here's a list of categories you can use to get started:
      • Beauty -- This would be your shampoos, toothpastes, lotions - things you find in the bath aisles.t
      • Cans -- I also put my boxed things like pasta and hamburger helper in this category.
      • Baby
      • Frozen -- My biscuits and cinnamon rolls are usually filed in here because I know they are in the refrigerated section.
      • Meats
      • Snacks -- Include items like candy, snack crackers, chips, cookies and such in here.
      • Drinks
      • Dairy
      • Cleaning
      • Paper Products
      • Cooking -- like sugar, cookie mixes
      • First Aid -- like your medicines, batteries

Once you have your tabs labeled, start organizing your coupons in the clear plastic holders.  If I have more than one of the coupon, I'll double them up in the same pocket of the plastic sheet.  I'll always make sure the amount is visible or easy to see as well as the expiration date so I don't miss out on good coupons before they expire.

**Shopping Trip Tip --When I go to plan out my list for the week, I will write down the item and put a "c" next to it on my list so I know it has a coupon.  Since my binder is organized, I know where I can grab that coupon and then I stick in the front of my binder for checkout.  I keep the front pocket of my binder clean and clear so as I shop, I put all of my coupons that I'll need at checkout in there.  When I grab the item, I grab the coupon and put it in it's rightful place in that pocket to avoid missing or mixed up coupon catastrophes.

How do you start your coupon collection?  Definitely subscribe to your local newspaper so you can have your coupons every Sunday.  (Plus, it's like Christmas every Sunday to see that little plastic bag out by your mailbox!)  I scored a great day with the Indy Star where I pay less than $5 a month for a year.  Be on the lookout for pricing specials like that and you may want to get more than one subscription.  If not, I'll always run to CVS or the gas station Sunday morning and get another copy or two if I know the coupons are good for the week.  Also, don't forget about your online coupons at places like coupons.com, smartsource.com and redplum.com.

**Another tip -- stay up on your cutting!!  Nothing is more annoying than spending hours on your Sunday afternoon cutting coupons from the past weeks -- trust me.

Using an organized binder is so much easier and faster than envelopes or stacks.  It will take you some time to get it organized, but it is well worth it in the end.  Plus, once you have it completed, all you have to do is add new coupons and get rid of expired ones!  Now I give you permission to go shopping...for your binder that is!

          Happy Shopping (and organizing) :)

You could sign up for PlaytexBaby's mailing list and they MAY send you a $2 off coupon in your email.  I'm not sure if this deal is still going on because I signed up for it before Christmas and can't get another coupon.  But I'd definitely try to see if you could get a great $2 off coupon to stack on top of this hot deal!

More Deals at Meijer - 1/26

I got some great deals at Meijer last night!  One tip is to make sure you take a good look at the aisles as you go down them for sales that aren't advertised!

Here are a few I scooped up that weren't in the ad this week:
--Sweet and Low (100 ct) -- sale price $1.98.  Use $0.50 off coupon (SS 1/1) which doubles to $1.00.  Final price: $0.98 for the box.

--Mini Jet-Puffed Marshmallows -- on sale for $1 as part of the 10 for $10.

--Chef Boyardee ABC and Dinosaur shapes -- sale price $0.72.  Use $0.50/4 Chef Boyardee pasta (SS 1/1) which doubles to $1.  Final price: $0.42 per can -- these make great lunches for the little ones!

I also hit up the clearance aisles (which are usually at the end of the aisles at Meijer) and got some really hot steals:
--Two big bottles of Pantene - clearance price $1.47 per bottle.  Used $3/2 Pantene products (P&G Jan.).  Final price: FREE
--Oral B Action Toothbrush - sale price $5.15.  Used $3 off Action toothbrush (Jan. P&G).  Final price: $2.15.

--Jergens Natural Glow spray lotion -- clearance $4.24.  Used $3/2 Jergen lotion products.  Final price: $2.74 each.

--Mitten clips (for my sons coat) -- clearance price $0.75.

--Falls Creek Winter Coats -- clearance price $5!! Limited selection, but $5 for a coat, can't beat that!

I saved $170 last night -- and I used the Meijer match-up and made sure my binder was organized and ready to go!  I honestly didn't take more than one hour total ALL WEEK for this trip.  That does include clipping and organizing coupons.  We'll post some tips on how to organize your binders later today, but you can save yourself money without taking hours of your time away from your family!

            Happy Shopping! :)

            Diaper Deal at Target

I know I've converted some of you before, but I'm here to do it again.  All of you moms with babies who are in size 3 and larger diapers, I HIGHLY recommend you try out Up & Up Diapers.

You're skeptical, right?  Okay, I was too.  We lived, pooped and peed Pampers.  BUT seriously, if my HUSBAND agrees with me AND comments on their great value, then I promise you - you won't be disappointed.

If you haven't tried them out, but are willing to take my advice, go to Target's website to print of youf $1 off any Up & Up product.

            Here's how the scenario works:
--Jumbo pack of Up & Up diapers - $6.29.  Use your $1 off coupon and you'll pay just $5.29 for a pack of diapers!

I suggest you then print it out again and save it, because you'll go back for the box, which will be just $12.99 after you use your $1 coupon. :)  Seriously moms, if you have a baby who is in size 3 or larger diapers, Up & Up brand will do the trick!

            Happy Savings! :)

Mommy Monday - Organization Under $5

            Monday, January 23, 2012

Our house is getting smaller by the minute!  Unfortunately, we aren't putting our place up on the market until March, so I needed to be creative about how to make our house more organized yet functional for everyone - especially an active 15 month old.

So, for starters, what in the world am I supposed to do with all these toys??  Well, at Lowe's, we snagged these cute little buckets for $4.97 each!

Super affordable yet cute and the perfect fit for all most of my son's toys.  They fit just right  in the corner of the living room too.  When we move to our new place, these buckets will be great for his toy room or even his bedroom.  A great find for such a cheap price!

Another thing that absolutely drives me nuts is the chaos and clutter under my sink.  I actually have to give props to my son's sitter for this creative idea.
We purchased a $4.99 plastic shower curtain rod from Meijer and turned the chaos into this beauty:

It's an adjustable rod that reaches up to 40 feet in length.  All you have to do is extend it from one side of your sink to the other, which then creates hanging room for your cleaners and spray bottles.

Then, we ran to our local dollar store and snagged up a few cute plastic baskets for just $1 each for those items, like sponges and Clorox wipes, that don't hang up.

Organizing your home doesn't have to be expensive. Don't underestimate your local hardware and dollar stores.  Next time you're at Target, hit up their dollar bin too!  Because less clutter means less mess and stress for Mama!

            Happy Organizing! :)

            Great Mott's Scenario

            Here's how it works:
--Buy 5 Mott's Apple Juices at $2.19 each.  Final price: $10.95 but then take off your instant $5 after buying five, so you'll pay $5.95, which makes each juice just $1.19!

Better yet, if you scored the $1.50 off coupon from Mott's Facebook, you'll pay just $0.85 for each bottle of juice!
Grab it while you can!  At my Meijer, the shelves were starting to look bare! :)

            Cheap WhoNu? Cookies at Marsh

Michele recently posted a great deal on WhoNu? cookies this week at Marsh.  BETTER YET, in this week's Smart Source, there is a $1 off coupon you can stack onto this deal!

            Free Antibiotics at Meijer

            Sunday, January 22, 2012

Hey Mamas - if you're child is in school, daycare or a babysitter weekly like mine is, then we know that illness is unavoidable, especially during flu season!  But recently at the doctor's office (as we were getting my son's first antibiotic of the flu season) the nurse informed me that Meijer fills certain antibiotics free of cost for your children!

Which ones?  Well, here's a list of the antibiotics that they will fill for free regardless of your insurance or co-pays:

            •Amoxicillin
            •Cephalexin
            •SMZ-TMP
            •Ciprofloxacin
            •Ampicillin
            •Penicillin VK

All you need is a prescription from your doctor and you have to pick it up in the store.  I will pay the extra $3 for flavoring, but $3 for an antibiotic is a steal!

Next time you have to get an antibiotic filled for your child, don't forget to check out Meijer fist to see if it is part of their free antibiotic program!

            Cheap Tide at CVS

            Saturday, January 21, 2012

Great deal on Tide this week at CVS!  Sale price: $5.99. Stack a $2 coupon from P&G January and you'll pay just $3.99 for a smaller bottle of Tide!

I definitely try to stock up on Tide when I find it at a price like this.  I currently have 7 bottles in my laundry room cabinet.  Guess I'll be adding one more! :)

            HOT Meijer Clearance

I love my Meijer! (I frequently shop at the one in Noblesville.)  Tonight my family and I made a trip over there to pick up a few things, so of course we had to make a stop by the clearance aisles.

Here is my super find of the night:

            Original price: $34.99
            Clearance price (75% off!): $8.75
Final price with 15% off mPerk: $7.44

Amazing toy clearance going on right that I suggest you check out!  Plus, check your mPerks for great discounts - definitely love Meijer's digital coupons!

Here are some other items I scored on:
--Colgate Toothpaste - clearance price $1.51.  Used $0.75 off any Colgate toothpaste (RP 1/1) .  Final price: $0.76

--Chapstick lip balm - $1.09.  Used $0.25 off any Chapstick (coupons.com) which doubled to $0.50.  Plus, clipped a $0.25 mPerk.  Final price:  $0.34

--Gerber 2 Pack Sleepers - clearance price $5.50.  Used 15% off General Merchandise mPerk.  Final price: $4.68.

It's always a good trip when you save more than you spend!  Check your local Meijer's clearance aisles - especially the beauty, baby and toys aisles.  And don't forget your mPerks!  It definitely pays to sign up for digital coupons at any store where you frequently shop.

I think my son is diggin' mama's new find, what do you think? :)

Let me know what you find!

            Happy Shopping! :)
