Providing a Brighter Future with Operation Smile

Sunday, September 29, 2013

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions are my own.

Being a teacher and now a mom of almost two little sweeties, charities that help children really pull at my heart.  I am blessed with a perfectly healthy little boy and hopefully a soon to be healthy baby girl.  Unfortunately, not all families experience this same kind of situation.

Did you know that every minute, a child is born with a cleft condition?
When I learned this, it made me realize even more how lucky I am to have a healthy little boy napping away in his room right now.

But as I kept reading about Operation Smile's amazing organization, this fact really tugged at my heart:
One of every ten of those children die before their first birthday and many of those children that do survive will never speak, eat, socialize or even smile.  Sadly, many of these families can't afford to provide their children with the surgeries needed to ensure a productive life.

Honestly, people living in the United States are extremely fortunate to have doctors and hospitals that are trained and educated to help our children and babies born with severe medical conditions.  Most of the time the surgeries provided for our families are routine and many times covered completely by insurance.
However, other countries don't have these same opportunities for their children that we are offered.

Thankfully, there are people that are willing to help these children -- let me introduce to you the international charity developed to help children called Operation Smile.
Operation Smile is a volunteer based charity that offers free cleft surgeries to children.  For over thirty years, this charity has provided over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born all over the world with facial deformities.  Operation Smile, along with the help of their medical volunteers will also train local doctors in developing countries as well as strengthen their healthcare systems to help ensure that children can be treated when born with these conditions.

So this amazing organization provides help for these children as well as offers training to doctors in the countries so they can provide medical opportunities for children born with facial deformities and cleft lips.  Operation Smile is one of the most well known children charities AND supports sixty different countries to ensure a better future in these children's lives.

How awesome is that!

Well my friends -- ever heard of CampusBookRentals.com?
This textbook rental company has partnered with Operation Smile and is supporting this organization by donating over 1,000 cleft lip surgeries this year.  With every text book that is rented, CampusBookRentals.com will donate to Operation Smile.

College friends -- be sure to also check out their RentBack program!  With this program you are given the opportunity to rent your own textbooks back to students and earn up to four times more than you would selling your books back at the end of the semester.
$$ Do you see the dollar signs? $$

So spread the word to your college friends and family because why not rent your textbooks, be able to make money selling them back and help a good cause all at the same time!

For more information on Operation Smile, visit their website.

31 Week Update

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

I started this post a week ago however last week my eyes were permanently opened with toothpicks.  This week is a bit better considering I have just eight more days until Fall Break.

Did I mention this is my last week in my twenties?
Next Tuesday is the big 30...wah wah.
I do plan to celebrate accordingly after the birth of this baby...

 Now how about some updates?
Due date:   November 25th --However, I was measuring one week ahead at my appointment last Tuesday.  Good news?  Or more of a reason to feel large and in charge?  You decide.

Gender: Girly girl!  However, Baby Sissy still remains nameless.  I think we've narrowed it down to four names but the one I really want Kurtis doesn't.  Now let's see who wins this batttle...mwwhahaha.

How do I feel?  Exhausted to say the least.  School keeps me on my feet almost all day so when the evening rolls around I'm a grump and a half and so flipping tired -- hence my last of blogging lately.  I promise to get on it a bit better...maybe.  A few weeks ago we had a random heat wave and my feet did swell which made me even angrier.  I refuse to be caught in a pair of sandals and have foot fat spilling over my shoes like Kim Kardashian.  My rings still fit though, but I give it two more weeks tops.

Cravings/Aversions?  I  have noticed that my stomach gets full a lot quicker since entering the latter stages of the third trimester.  Recently I have developed  quite the love affair with my son's mini corn dogs that he won't eat anymore.  I seriously HATE corn dogs too.  Even since Kindergarten when I had a  horrible school lunch experience with them and 25 years later I'm still traumatized.  Chex Mix is still on my hate list as well ever since I overdosed on a bag first trimester and ended up puking my brains out for hours.

How do my clothes fit?  I'd prefer to wear my husband's clothes if that was an option.  But it's not so I'm trying to wear my most comfortable maternity clothes and I will get as many wears about of my maxi dresses before the cold hits.

Sleep:  I've been taking magnesium for my restless legs and I do notice a bit a difference.  I wake up like three times to pee, which any pregnant woman knows is quite an excursion just to get out of bed.  Some nights I try to fall back asleep and ignore it but then I pay for that later...trust me.

Movement:  She is a busy little mama!  Tonight Cohen was screaming and laughing in the bathtub and she started flipping around to the sound of her brother's voice.  Made me laugh because poor thing hasn't even experienced his high pitched excited scream yet...Let's just say it's high and loud enough for my hearing impaired father to cringe when he hears it.

My Exercise Routine: Well, last week I worked out for a total of one day.  This week, I've worked out once but I plan to do more.  I try to get out every night for a brief walk and then while Cohen takes his breathing treatment I'll throw on my Barre video to get in some arms or legs.  I'm determined to get Michelle Obama arms post pregnancy.  I'm seriously dying to get some normal clothes on and my feet are asking for my heels.

It's crazy to think that in about nine weeks we will have another addition to our family.  My husband has been a busy man this week turning her closet in an amazeball custom closet fit for a princess.  Seriously, he apparently understands the importance of organization and being able to see all the fabulous clothes and shoes that she owns.  Yes, she does have a pair of pink Uggs that I'm obsessed with just a bit.
The goal is to have the room painted and start accessorizing by the weekend.

I love that I can finally think girly.  :)

Now I'm going to try to turn off my brain.

Happy Baby! :)

American Picking with Capri Sun Big Pouch

Monday, September 23, 2013

Last weekend my stepdaughter, husband and myself decided to spend an evening catching up on one of our favorite shows, American Pickers.  So on a recent trip trip to Walmart, we decided to stock up on our favorite snacks and treats.  Sophie's eye caught the new Capri Sun Big Pouch drinks, so of course we had to throw a few into our cart for our American Pickers marathon!  Luckily we were able to score all of our favorite flavors even though the selection had been picked over a bit.  Sophie loved the Capri Sun Big Pouch Fruit Punch while my husband and I enjoyed the Capri Sun Big Pouch Maui Cooler and Strawberry Kiwi flavors.  The Capri Sun Big Pouches made the perfect addition to our family evening of snacks and American Pickers.  Plus the great thing about these pouches is their size -- you can definitely savor the flavor and taste because of they are over 11 ounces of yummy juice!

My husband and his teen daughter are completely nature and adventure fanatics.  After our marathon of American Pickers episodes, my husband decided that it was a great time to go through the crates and boxes his dad recently sent over to us that had been sitting in his basement for years.  Currently they are stored in our attic so we decided to get our own picking kit together to explore what treasures we could find in these boxes.

As we searched the items we needed for our kit, we came across a new contest hosted by Mike Wolfe, creator and star of American Pickers on History.  All you need to do is take a picture of an item you found picking, complete the entry form and upload your picture.  The winner gets the opportunity to head down to Nashville with three other family or friends and go on a picking exploration with Mike Wolfe, the creator and star of American Pickers on History himself!  There are also 100 other winners who will win a Capri Sun Pickers Prize Package that includes all the tools you need to go on a picking adventure yourself - including The Kid Pickers book, a messenger bag, gloves, a bandana, a journal and pen, flashlights, t-shirt, carabineers and a magnifying glass.
We were also able to get some great picking tips from Mike Wolfe, creator and star of American Pickers on History by watching his webisode before we started our adventure.

Check it out yourself!

Kurtis, Sophie and I were super excited to find out this picking adventure with Mike Wolfe, the creator and star of American Pickers on History and Capri Sun Big Pouches.  So we got to assembling our own picking kit to use as we sorted through the crates and tubs in the attic.

We included:
  • gloves to protect our hands
  • a bandana to cover our face to help not breathe in all the dust and dirt
  • a little bag to hold any of our picking items we found
  • a flashlight so we could see where we were going
  • a notepad and pen to write down any important information that we found that may go along with our picks.
Of course we also had our Capri Sun Big Pouches to quench our thirst because we knew we'd get thirsty with all of our picking!

We took our kit and headed to the attic access door to start pulling out the boxes and crates to search away.  At first we just came across old items that Kurtis' dad had saved from back in the day such as newspapers, sports videos and even Kurtis' homecoming crown!  But then, we came across a box that was filled with some great finds!  This tub contained old ornaments that had been used by the family's great grandmother.  There were old magazines and newspaper clippings and then we found this brass musical angel that was in great condition.  This angel is obviously old because of the dated material, so we decided this would be the perfect pick to use for our contest entry.

This was a really fun day for our family.  Kurtis and I don't get to spend a lot of time with our teen stepdaughter, so this picking adventure gave us the perfect opportunity to share some laughs and fun together - especially before our family expands even more.  Whether we win the grand prize and the chance to go picking with Mike Wolfe, creator and star of American Pickers on History or one of the one hundred Capri Sun Pickers Prize Packages, we had a great day of family bonding and picking through our attic of mysteries.

Car Seat Safety Tips From Julie Vallese, Safety 1st Consumer Safety Expert. Importance of Rear Facing

In March of 2011 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated their car seat recommendations advising that children should remain rear facing until the age of two, or until they reach the maximum height and weight requirements allowed by their car seat. According to a study in the Journal of Injury Prevention children under the age of two are 75 percent less likely to die or be severely injured in the event of a car crash if they are rear facing. When a child is rear facing their head, neck and spine are better supported and in the event of an accident, crash forces are distributed over the child’s entire body. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, 75% of car seats are installed incorrectly. Never use used or old car seats. To read all tips from Julie Vallese follow this link

OraMD Review and Giveaway

Disclosure:  This product review was made possible by OraMD.  I was not compensated for this review other than a product sample. All opinions are 100% mine.

I've always been a huge advocate when it comes to oral mouth care.  I'm closing in on the big 3-0 (yikes I know) in a couple of weeks and I can confidently say that I only have one cavity.  I definitely hope to continue this trend as I get older because let's be honest, nothing is worse than bad breath and nasty teeth!

I have never been "brand loyal" to specific toothpaste or dental care products. As long as it cleans and protects my teeth as well as does the job, you have me sold.  When I was contacted by OraMD to review their product, I was definitely up for it.  OraMD is a liquid toothpaste, mouthwash and breath freshener that kills the harmful bacteria that can lead to oral health problems - including gum disease. It contains 100% natural ingredients of peppermint, spearmint and almond oil and is safe for children ages 3 and older.  Plus OraMD does not contain GMOs and is alcohol free, which is another plus for this mama!

At first I was a little apprehensive because I wondered how a little bottle would serve the purpose of all three products (toothpaste, mouthwash and breath freshener) that I currently use.  Plus, the first few times I used it the taste was quite stout, but luckily I was prepared for that because OraMD warned me  beforehand in the directions.

But I followed the directions and used it as follows:
--Brush twice a day with 2-5 drops on your toothbrush and brush normally.
--Also use OraMD in the morning and evening as a mouthwash - put 2-5 drops into an ounce of water and swish around.
--Finally, put 2-5 drops of OraMD on your tongue a couple times a day and coat your teeth and gums to help continue to kill those germs and bacteria.

After I finally got past the stout taste, it was more minty of a flavor and basically tasted like a breath mint.  I also flossed like I normally do as part of my OraMD oral hygiene regime.  Another great feature of OraMd is that the bottle is small enough to fit into my purse so I can throw it into my bag in the morning and get it out as need throughout my day.  I also love the fact that it is not tested on animals and for my Vegan readers -- you bet that OraMd is a vegan product!

So how were my results you are wondering?

Well, overall I was quite impressed with OraMD.  One bottle lasts about a month and costs about 40% less than what I would spend on the leading brands of toothpastes and rinses.  My teeth felt clean throughout the day and I didn't have to chew gum to freshen up my breath.  Plus I loved the fact that as I was cleaning my teeth and gums I didn't feel like my mouth was burning like it does with certain products that contain alcohol.

Maybe you're looking for a new product to support your oral hygiene routine or have you ever considered finding something that will help prevent expensive oral care procedures in the future?  I highly recommend checking out OraMD  - with 99% customer satisfaction and a 100% money back guarantee, you are crazy not to consider this option!

Listen up readers!
The manufacturer is willing to offer my readers one FREE bottle. They said they would love to have our readers try out OraMD and agreed to send one bottle FREE if our readers would pay a minimal shipping and handling charge.  They also agreed to include 2 eye-opening reports called 1) “The 6 Hidden Dangers In Toothpaste” and 2) “Why The FDA Requires A Warning Label On Your Toothpaste.”  That’s a total value of over $40.00.  Click here to get your FREE bottle and FREE reports now.

Buy It:
--For more information on OraMD, visit the Trusted Health Products Website for more information.  You can also visit and like them on Facebook.

Win It:
--Three (3) lucky winners will win a one-month supply (one bottle) of OraMD.  This giveaway is run via Rafflecopter. The more entries completed, the better your chances of winning! Open to US residents only.

Fun with Mega Bloks First Builders Firetruck

Wednesday, September 4, 2013

My son is at the age where he loves to build, build, build and then knock it down and make a mess.  We recently pulled out the huge bag of Mega Bloks he got for his birthday last year and all he wants to do is build things and then take it apart to build something new.  I am fascinated by the things he thinks of building and how his attention span is held for more than three minutes - especially at the age of almost three!  It is also great motor skill practice for his little working hands.

I recently had the opportunity to review the Mega Bloks's First Builders Firetruck and I knew this would be perfect for Cohen.  You would have thought Christmas came early in our house when that package showed up!  Cohen kept jumping up and down telling me to "Open it Mom! Open it!"  The second I was able to get the Mega Bloks Firetruck out of the box he was off on a building adventure!  Cohen started stacking the blocks to make buildings and then he'd build up on the truck.  He was working so nicely independently and it was great seeing him work on his problem solving skills as he tried fitting the blocks together one by one.  A feature that Cohen really loves about this Mega Bloks First Builders Firetruck is the ladder that he can move up, down and side to side.  He really enjoys creating buildings up to the ladder or even building off it it to see how high he can make his tower.

Another great things about this Mega Bloks Firetruck is the fact that the blocks are stored right in the truck itself!  It makes for super easy and fun clean up plus Cohen always knows where he can find his blocks.  Anything that makes clean up quick and easy get the mom approval from me!

The Mega Bloks Firetruck also comes with a little firefighter, which Cohen has thoroughly enjoyed creating structures for and using him to knock them down.  The little firefighter is super cute and can be placed to fit on one of the blocks or there is a place for him to drive the firetruck at the very front.  I get a real kick out of watching Cohen drive his firetruck around with his firefighter at the front, all while he making the siren noise with his little sweet voice.
Adorbes.

(Yes, we do love to play in our undies.)

Mega Bloks offers a variety of First Builders products that are perfect for children ages one to five.  Many of the products are also gender specific so you are sure to find the perfect gift for any child, boy or girl, in this age range. Mega Bloks offers hours of playtime for you and your little one to enjoy as well as quality products that are sure to withstand the rough and tough hands of busy toddlers.  Whether it's a gift or just to encourage independent playtime for your own child, Mega Bloks First Builders Firetruck is sure to be a hit in your household.

For more information on the Mega Bloks First Builders Firetruck or another Mega Bloks product, visit their website.  Mega Bloks products can also be found at your local retailer, such as Targer or Walmart.

This product review was made possible by Mega Bloks.  I was not compensated for this review other than a product sample. All opinions are 100% mine.

Cohen and I made our weekly trip to Target this week unfortunately this time we had to grab meds for the nebulizer because Mama has passed on her cold to the poor little guy. :(
