That One Time I Made Promises I Probably Won't Keep

Happy 2014 my friends!
It seems crazy to me that the chaos of the holidays is already here and gone.  Sometimes I wonder what the big fuss is about.  I mean we spend over two months getting into the holiday spirit and then it's over in the blink of an eye!  This year it definitely felt faster than ever before, most likely because of the arrival of Lola Girl.  But I'm excited for 2014 and can't wait to see what's in store this year!

Last year my cousin had this great idea of sharing three things we wanted to add to our life, three things we want to discard from our life and then three new experiences from the year.  I posted mine from last year earlier this week and well, I didn't keep to my promise very well.  However, it's a new year and I want to try to make reasonable plans that will only make my life better!

So here's what my plans are for 2014:

I wish to add to my life...
1.  Healthier Meals
Okay, this was one from last year as well but I really want to become better at this one.  I've decided to start slow by making sure we have a vegetable for EVERY meal.  And no, as much as I'd love it, tater tots do NOT count as a vegetable.

2. Weekly date night with the hubster
Babysitters are expensive these days so I'm not expecting a dinner and a movie every week.  However, we could still do dinner and a movie but at home together when the kids have gone to bed.  I think sometimes we let the hustle and bustle of work and family get in the way of "us" time.  So I plan on spending at least one night a week together alone -- and without the distraction of technology too!
That means no Candy Crush dear.

3.  New Recipes
Okay, this one is kind of corny HOWEVER I would love to cook one new recipe every week for my family.  I'm hoping that by adding a new food to the weekly menu maybe, just maybe we can start to lure Cohen out of his picky food habits.
Wishful thinking?  I hope not...

I wish to discard...
1.  Technology Distractions
I'm sure I'm not that only one that is bad about this one.  But I want to power down at night and spend the evening with my family without playing Candy Crush or having the iPhone or iPad distracting and wasting my precious time.  Once the kiddos are in bed I will allow myself time to blog and browse my social media obsessions but I really plan on getting better about this one in 2014.

2.  Junk Food
Seriously, I love me a good bag of Cheetos.  But once I hit 30 and after baby #2, the body isn't responding as well to those calories and food dye.  I can't say that I'll get rid of it completely and I honestly believe that it's not healthy to completely get rid of all your favorite treats.  However, I do believe that portion control and modesty is the right answer.  So yes, I can have the occasional Cheeto splurge but I need to make sure it's the allotted portion size...not the entire bag.

3.  Excessive/Random Spending
Last week my husband gave me a limit at the grocery and said  - "DO NOT GO OVER THIS AMOUNT."  I seriously was on a mission to stick to that amount.  You should've seen me crossing off my list, calculating on my calculator, putting items back and price checking everything with my digital and paper coupons.  But in order to be able to stay home until April I need to be WAY better about my spending habits.  So I look forward to no more random trips to Target and the more time I can spend at home utilizing the things I have -- not the items I just purchased in the Dollar Spot.

My three new experiences this year...
1.  Run the Mini Marathon
I am on a mission this year to not only run it under 2 hours but to not get pregnant in the process.
Third time will be the charm -- as in the charm that I actually am able to run the race without being with child.

2.  Host more friends and family gatherings
This technically isn't an experience but I really want to host more parties and gatherings.  We had some friends over for New Years Eve and it was just nice to be able to sit and enjoy company in our home.  I hope to host more dinners and have a variety of different little gatherings -- like an IU basketball party even though they aren't as fabulous this year...

3.  Venture to a TRX class
Okay so I've heard this class is hardcore and to be honest, I'm not in the best of shape yet but I really want to try one of these classes this year.  I'll probably wait until Spring when I've been running a little bit more so I'm not that student puking in the trash can by the door.

Here's to a fabulous 2014 friends!
Cheers!

What are your plans for this year?  Any resolutions you really hope you'll stick with this time around?

  1. TRX is awesome – one of the most fun classes I've done! And it's easy to modify for your strength and skill level, too. You've got some great goals for the new year!

  2. Like you, I want to spend even more time with family and friends and love hosting them in our home. I'm not familiar with TRX, but it sounds like I probably should be. :) Have a great 2014!

  3. What a cute little guy!! My mission this year is cutting back on my random spending as well. I really want to buckle down on what goes on my list, not forgetting items and making random trips to the store which always ends up costing me an extra $80 or more.

  7. Some great goals! I like the way you broke it down by groups of three, it makes the goals seem more managable.

  9. We started date nights about a year ago. Every Saturday after the kids are in bed, we cook dinner for just us together and then we either watch a movie or play a game. No phones, or computers allowed.

  10. I feel like one recipe a week is so doable and will be a lot of fun! Date night with hubs is a really good idea too...it's easy to ignore each other in the childrearing years!
