This summer the Baumgartners are going big on home improvement projects.  We have officially lived in our house for three years now and slowly, but surely are making progress on making this place a home.  Honestly, the first year was spent just painting, unpacking and taking it all in.  Then we added a new baby the second year and this year third year, well I guess we will add another baby again.  Apparently more kids means more decorating, well at least for us.  Either that or we might just be crazy!

This week's projects include prepping and lowering our island.  We will be getting granite installed in two weeks.  I have to be honest, I actually had fun picking out the granite.  I totally felt like I was one of my favorite flippers from HGTV.  My husband does all the handy work while I pick out colors and textures.  Okay, I actually have to be the main color eye because he's colorblind so basically he has to trust my taste. But the plan is to lower our island so we can add bar stools to make more seating and open up the area from the kitchen to the living room.  I have to say I'm quite blessed to have a handy husband.  He even refinished old stools we had that we will use for our bar, which saved us a good chunk of change.  Now if only I could get him to use a coupon...

Our next big project is decorating the three upstairs bedrooms.  This will include lots of rearranging, moving, priming and painting - none that I'm a fan of in any way or form.  But I've finally made a mental plan of what needs to be done because once school gets into full swing, my (extremely) pregnant self is going to be too tired to do much of anything.  Throw another baby into the mix and you know that NOTHING will be accomplished for at least the next three months as well.  So the plan is to move Baby Girl into our spare/Sophie's room and Sophie, the gem, will get to bunk up with Cohen whenever she's in town.  Ideally this room is the perfect nursery size wise.  It's the smallest of the three rooms so it just makes the most sense to put the new baby's nursery into it.

I've never really done a theme for the kids' rooms.  I've always just kind of picked a color and been quite plain about decorating with random pictures and prints.  Lately I've become obsessed with going to craft stores to help me brainstorm my ideas.  Maybe it's my hormones or maybe I am finally ready to get into the decorating spirit of our new(ish) home.  But after some searching and inspiration I decided to go with a mermaid theme for Baby Girl's room.  It is no secret that I'm obsessed with the beach.  (I may have begged Kurtis to move to Florida after our last vacation.)  But I didn't want to go overboard and cheesy with a beach theme so I thought a basic room with mermaid themed accents would be perfect.  Since the room isn't big to begin with, I have decided that I don't want a color that is too overbearing or one that will make it look even smaller.  I have a few paint samples in mind but I think we will go with the pale, light pink route.  I know, how cliche you say to paint a girl's room pink.  But hang in there with me, I have more to show!

After a recent trip to Walmart, my theme was inspired more as I walked through the baby aisle.  The amount of adorableness that Disney Baby has to offer sent my creative vibes into high gear!  I lucked out and was able to find one of the new Ariel Sea Treasures crib bedding sets.  The aqua and pink colors are perfect as well as the precious Ariel print.  The comforter is soft and comfy and will definitely be perfect for her as she grows older.  I also found another crib sheet print that will be a great extra to have on hand but conveniently goes along with my theme.  I'm also excited about the super soft Ariel themed blanket and matching flannel blankets.  Oh my little heart continues to melt with all of this mermaid sweetness!

I was also able to snag a few decorative pieces that I plan to use in the room.  I grabbed this amazing anchor wall piece half off as well as this really cool whale tail that will look super cute on her shelf.  We also had a few extra white box shelves that I scored at a garage sale that I want to use on the wall.  I plan on getting some flat shelves to use too.

I wanted to create a nursery that wasn't too cheesy yet one that can mold with Baby Girl as she gets older.  You know, one that I won't have to worry about redecorating again in oh, about five years?  I'm super excited to be able to get started on her room and will continue to post updates as we get going!

  1. What a cute way to tie the room theme in beyond just the classic items that are already put together for you. She'll love this look for so many years! #client
